Even if your fiber modem is new to you, it could have older firmware that may not play nicely with your router, and vice-versa. You may need to update some kit somewhere, or check for newer BIOS or other networking firmwares. Anything older than ~3 years, especially some Arris modems and their clones (a brand likely not applicable for Google Fiber), has a higher chance of fumbling that new protocol. Many early teething pains have been ironed out with firmware and driver updates, but for some folks they still have older networking components involved that may meet paper spec, but just don’t hold up. Some networking components just don’t handle the 2.5 Gbps protocol negotiation well, with abnormal results ranging from garbage speeds to lost connections, and it does sometimes seem to be specific to certain websites (different ones per each user.) You describing that difference, I was just nodding along, “yup.” Not enough to call it broken, but enough to notice above the background noise of networking questions. 2.5 Gbps ethernet is still green, and we’ve seen several, sporadic issues. Hey, fellow IT Pro, I do SI support on a continuing roll of the “latest” consumer tech. Try a different dns ( there are reports where the dns from the isp caused issuesĪs mentioned by MichaMMA try using a different DNS server. If you have a puma based modem this could be the problem as well, but if it used to work and now doesnt, unless you have recently replaced the modem, then its probably not this. If you have hany questions feel free to ask me. Sorry I digress, so run the bufferbloat test and see what it tells you about your connection, if you get anything less then an A run the ping plotter test and go from there. They say there working on it, they gave be an extra 100 mbps, but it really isnt getting any better. For me its between my modem and their tap. To figure out this one get a copy of ping plotter, its free and it will show how your traffic is flowing between you and where ever. If you get high latency values on this site, you’ll need to determine where the actual fault lies. And CSRs will look at that speed test and say sorry sir nothing is wrong you getting the speed that you account is provisioned for.ĭo this run this speed test and tell me what it says: Bufferbloat Test by Waveform I had them since they’ve been up here in the area. LOL you cant rely on spectrum speed test it tells you nothing. Likewise for ISP throttling, the people that I have adjusted settings for were on various ISP’s and were all experiencing issues until I changed their settings. So I don’t think it’s an MS server capacity issue. I can’t say why this doesn’t work for everyone but there are a lot of variables here, NIC’s, routers, OS configurations, drivers etc… but from my experience since I changed my settings around the SU5 update time period I have not had any problems. I have used this same solution to fix at least 10 other peoples download speeds and they all now get close to their max ISP connection speed. Ever since then I have downloaded everything at 200-250mbps regardless of whether it’s patch day prime time or not. My solution that I posted at the beginning of this thread is what worked for me. I already had NordVPN but wasn’t using it for the sim so I tried a download with it activated and connections from various locations around the globe but it still stayed at 20-30 mbps. I looked around on the forums and saw many people complaining of similar issues and that a VPN seemed to help. Subsequent downloads were also well over 200mbps for the next few updates but sometime around SU3 I was only getting 20/30 mbps. On the original release of the sim I downloaded it at a speed I would expect from my 300mbps connection. As I mentioned in my original post on this topic, I too suspected ISP throttling of some sort but I was wrong in my case.
